Shopify Digital Product Passport: How to Add DPPs to Your Shopify Store

Short answer: To add Digital Product Passports (DPPs) to a Shopify store, you need a system that creates and maintains the passport data, and a way to get it into your store. Shopify can display product data, but it is not a passport system. With Portia, you build passports from product and supplier data, and a one-way integration pushes them to Shopify.
What does a Digital Product Passport have to do with Shopify?
A Digital Product Passport is “a set of data specific to a product” that is “accessible via electronic means through a data carrier” (Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, Article 2). For textile apparel, the European Commission says the DPP “will be accessible both in online points of sale and through a data carrier on the product itself, such as a QR code” (Commission textile apparel page). For a brand selling on Shopify, the online store is one of those points of sale.
Textile DPPs are not mandatory yet. The Commission plans to adopt the textile delegated act in Q4 2027, and it can apply no earlier than 18 months after it enters into force, so mid-to-late 2029 at the earliest (our estimate). See the ESPR Textile DPP Tracker.
Can you build a Digital Product Passport in Shopify alone?
Partly. Shopify metafields let you “extend an existing platform data model, such as products, customers, and orders with your own custom data”, and Shopify’s own example is adding care instructions to apparel products (Shopify Help Center: Metafields). That makes Shopify a good place to show passport information next to the product.
A passport is more than a product page, though. The Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR) sets requirements that every passport will have to meet once a product-specific act applies:
- A data carrier on the product. The passport must be connected through a data carrier to “a persistent unique product identifier” (Article 10(1)(a)). A customer who scans the label in a shop or at home should land on the passport, not only on your web store.
- Long-term availability. The passport must stay available even if the company that created it stops trading (Article 11(e)).
- Open data without lock-in. Passport data must be transferable “without vendor lock-in” (Article 10(1)(d)).
- Registration. Passports must be registered in the EU DPP Registry.
- Supplier evidence. Much of the data, such as materials, origin and certificates, comes from your suppliers, not from your store.
So the practical model for most Shopify brands is: create and maintain the passport data in a dedicated system, publish the passport behind a QR code, and send the passport data to Shopify for display.
How does Portia work with Shopify?
Portia is fashion PLM and Digital Product Passport software for small and medium brands. For Shopify, that means:
- A one-way integration. Portia pushes passport data to your Shopify store. Portia is the source of the data, and Shopify receives it. Data is not synced back from Shopify into Portia.
- Not an App Store listing. Portia connects to your store through its own integration; it is not a listed Shopify App Store app. The steps are in connecting Portia to your Shopify store.
- Custom integrations on request. If you need another connection, custom integrations are available on request.
- QR codes. Each passport is reached by scanning a QR code, so it works on the label as well as online.
- You choose the level. Your brand decides whether passports are created per style, per batch or per individual item.
- Languages. Passports are available in English, Swedish, German and Dutch, with more languages coming.
How do you add DPPs to a Shopify store with Portia?
- Get your product data into Portia. Import a CSV or create products directly. With your product data in a CSV and images ready, your first passport can be live in minutes.
- Add materials, suppliers and certificates. Your tier-1 suppliers can log in to enter their data and upload certificates.
- Choose the passport level. Style, batch or item, depending on what you can support today.
- Publish the passport. Each passport gets a QR code for the label or hangtag.
- Connect your Shopify store and push. Connect your store once, then push the passport data from Portia to Shopify.
Is Portia the right Shopify DPP option for you?
Portia is a good fit if you want product development, supplier data and passports in one place, and Shopify to display the result. It is probably not the right fit if you need:
- Two-way sync, for example orders or inventory flowing from Shopify back into Portia. The integration is one-way.
- A one-click App Store install. A search for “digital product passport” in the Shopify App Store (checked 20 October 2026) returns several apps that describe themselves as DPP tools.
- NFC or RFID tags. Portia passports are reached through QR codes.
- In-house LCA calculation. Environmental impact data is imported from partners or uploaded into Portia, not calculated there.
How is my data handled?
Your data is hosted in the EU (Ireland) on infrastructure certified to SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001. Those certifications belong to the hosting infrastructure, not to Portia itself. You can export your data whenever you want, and Portia is GDPR-aligned.

Frequently asked questions
Can I create a Digital Product Passport in Shopify?
You can display passport information in Shopify, for example with product metafields, but Shopify is not built to manage passports, supplier evidence or QR-code access over the product’s life. Most brands create the passport in a dedicated system and send the data to Shopify.
Does Portia have a Shopify integration?
Yes. Portia has a one-way Shopify integration: Portia pushes passport data to your Shopify store. Custom integrations are available on request.
Is Portia a Shopify App Store app?
No. Portia connects to your Shopify store through its own integration and is not listed in the Shopify App Store.
Does the integration sync data back from Shopify?
No. The integration is one-way, from Portia to Shopify.
Do I need a QR code if the passport is on my Shopify product page?
The ESPR requires a data carrier connected to a persistent unique product identifier, and the Commission expects textile passports to be reachable through a data carrier on the product itself. Portia passports are reached through QR codes.
When do Shopify fashion brands need DPPs?
There is no legal date for textiles yet. The Commission plans to adopt the textile delegated act in Q4 2027, and it can apply no earlier than 18 months after entering into force, so mid-to-late 2029 at the earliest. That is an estimate.
